How are prize amounts calculated?
Only the Powerball jackpot (Division 1) is pari-mutuel — a share of ticket sales split among Division 1 winners, so more winners means a smaller share each. Divisions 2 through 9 pay fixed cash amounts set in advance, no matter how many tickets win that tier. California is the exception: state rules require every division there, including the lower tiers, to be paid pari-mutuel.
How do I claim a Powerball prize?
Claim through the state or jurisdiction lottery where the ticket was bought, not through Multi-State Lottery Association — that body sets the game's rules but does not pay claims. Smaller prizes can usually be paid at any authorised retailer in that jurisdiction; larger amounts require contacting the jurisdiction's own lottery directly with the original ticket and ID. Claim periods vary by jurisdiction, roughly 90 days to a year from the draw date.
Are Powerball prizes taxed?
